About Our Region
The Cairns Region covers 4135km2 from Bloomfield, located within the magnificent wet tropical rainforest of the Daintree National Park in the north, to the quaint sugar village of Miriwinni in the south. The eastern boundary is formed by the Coral Sea coastline abutting Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
The Cairns Region is one of the fastest growing in Australia, with more than 3.5 per cent annual growth - well above both the State and national average.
Around 143,000 people call this tropical paradise home, and they come from a myriad of backgrounds. The region is a diverse, multicultural community where people truly make the difference. It also has one of the oldest intact surviving Indigenous communities in the world – the Kuku Yalanji.
The main community centres include Miriwinni, Babinda, Bramston Beach, Gordonvale, Edmonton, the Cairns CBD with its fabulous Esplanade precinct and swimming Lagoon, the Northern Beaches suburbs, Mossman, Port Douglas, and the beachside communities of Wonga, Newell and Cooya.
The Cairns Region is where the reef meets the rainforest, and Cairns Regional Council is the local authority responsible for the delivery of quality services, infrastructure and sustainable development in this unique tropical environment.
