Sister Cities - Sidney, British Columbia, Canada
Established a Sister City relationship in 1984.
The Port of Sidney on the Saanich Peninsula has a population in excess of 10,000. The town is the business hub of the northern part of the peninsula and the gateway to Vancouver Island via the BC Ferries from the mainland, the Anacortes Ferry from the United States and the Victoria International Airport.
Sidney's main businesses are boat building, ocean sciences, secondary manufacturing, marina operation, commercial fishing, tourism and commercial industry, catering to residents and tourists. Sidney is well renowned for its world famous Butchart Gardens which attract more that 750,000 visitors annually.
Students from Sidney have established a computer link with schools in Cairns. Tourism and trade opportunities are being investigated for future links.
These, and other "hands-on" activities help to maintain an important on-going liaison between the two cities.
