Animal Management Unit

The primary aim of this unit is to work with the community, encouraging responsible pet ownership through public education programs and working together co-operatively with the community to achieve an amicable co-existing neighbourhood for all residents.

The key objectives are summarised as:

  • Administer Animal Management in accordance with Local Law 2003 Keeping, Control and Impounding of Animals.
  • Encouraging responsible pet ownership.
  • Educate the community to increase the profile of Animal Management's principles and practices.

The main functions are:

  • Provide action and resolution of complaints relating to animal management matters.
    Immediate response to complaints of dog attacks.
  • Provide assessment of aggressive and nuisance dogs.
  • Provide routine and random patrols in all areas of Cairns Regional Council's area for straying animals.
  • Impoundment of some straying animals.
    Registration of dogs and the maintenance of the Registration Data base.
  • Promote, encourage and provide education for responsible pet ownership.
  • Provide education programs for schools and other community groups and individuals. This service is also happily provided on request.
  • Conduct inspection programs for registration and compliance with conditions for the keeping of dogs.

The Council's Pound is located at 145-161 McCoombe Street, Bungalow.

Release times and open for viewing:
5:00pm to 5:30pm Monday to Friday
2:00pm to 2:30pm Weekends and Public Holidays.
